Meredith's Getting Married

Meredith and Mikey have been together since high school. They took a break in college and got back together after that. That's a loooong time of being together They have built a life in Humboldt county with their home and the brewery. They've been "married" for years, but this summer will be official and I couldn't be happier.
We celebrated her bachelorette party in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. Here we are at 80s night...Marjena, Meredith and me, friends since our freshman year in high school. The weekend was wild and perfect. 24 girls all out to have a good time. NO drama. Just the way I like it.
I love the time I get to spend with my old friends. When we're together we just laugh...and laugh...and laugh. Seriously. My temples and sides hurt from laughing at just the stupidest things. Meredith had a great weekend as did we all. It was awesome to meet more of her friends from up north and I cannot wait for the wedding. I love Mer and Mikey and am so excited for them both. Such a memorable weekend.

 3rd birthday

Ryan is 3! On June 11, 2008 he entered our lives and completed our family. He is funny, snuggly, playful, stubborn, smart, loving, and full of energy.
He loves to wrestle, play pretend, cook in the kitchen (real and pretend), listen to stories, "read" books and more than anything, play instruments.
He dislikes most veggies, being told no, getting his hair washed, cleaning up his messes, and taking off his shoes.
Ryan is a big boy. 3. WOW.

Wisdom

I am in awe of wise people. These people know how to say and do things with such poise and calm. It comes from life experience and I long for wisdom like that. What a way to live! Last weekend my friend was telling me of a woman in her book group who is a mom. She says that every week she takes a nugget from this woman's words. She was telling me some of them.

1. She says that she tells her kids that TV is like dessert. They don't have it all the time, but it's nice to enjoy it every once in a while.
2. She tells her kids that if someone has enough courage to ask you to dance, you dance with them one time.
3. She only volunteers for things that directly connect her with her kids. She doesn't do PTA or join committees where her kids aren't seeing the volunteer work. She wants them to see her and be there with her. She will chaperone or coach or things like that.

Kim says that this woman is never judgmental. She says things in context and says it in a way that people listen.

B.O.Y

I never believed in the stereotypes that girls are one way and boys are another. I think that everyone comes out a certain way and that gender may or may not play a role. It just so happens that Ryan is a pretty stereotypical "boy." When he was 1 I did an experiment. I filled a basket with toys. They included dolls, drums, a hammer, a doctor set, cars, and plastic tea cups. At 1 he tossed the basket over so it all dumped out and pulled out the hammer and the car and the drums. He hammered a few things before he zoomed the car up the side of the couch and then proceeded to look for the drumsticks to play with the drum. I found this fascinating.
Ryan has tended to fit the stereotype in other ways. At 1 I was also concerned about his speech. His sister had started speaking at 9 months and that was my only gauge. He had a few words at 1 and I feared a life of developmental delays. Ok, ok...I MAY have overreacted :) I now have no concerns as the other day we ran out of applesauce and he exclaimed, "I am VERY, VERY disappointed, Mama." When he asked for a treat after dinner and we said no, he replied with, "You hurt my feelings and I don't like when you say rude words to me."
He loves to run and wrestle and bang and build. He plays with his little figures and they all have these tough little voices. "Hey, you wanna come to my house and jump on the bed?" "Yes! Let's do that and drive our cars!" Whenever we play pretend he wants to be the bad guy or the lion who roars, or the dinosaur.
He also has a soft side. He will sit and cuddle right into you. Ever since he saw pictures of the Royal Wedding in my magazine he has wanted to dress up like a princess. He pointed at Kate and said, "I'm going to grow up and marry a princess and KISS her!" He is always ready to "cook" something for us in his kitchen. He is so careful about putting the food on the plate and serving it to his customers.
Ryan runs everywhere. Runs to get his cup. Runs to the car. Runs to the potty (he's doing a fabulous job). Runs to his room. Everything is run, run, run.
We are hoping we are on the other side of the terrible 2's. Many friends have said that 3 is harder but I notice that all of these moms have had girls go through that. Let's hope Ry fits the mold of terrible 2's and not beyond :) He's getting more and more patient and in control by the day. I think back to when he would lose it once to twice a day and am glad it isn't happening at the moment.
He's my little dude. I am a lucky mom. He teaches me so much. Both of them do.

The Beginning is Better Than the End

It is the end of the school year. 2 and 1/2 weeks to go and I am OFF for 9 weeks! I can't wait to just be with the kids and do summer things. With that being said, I hate this time of the school year. It seems as though I would be loving it...the end! We did it! It's done! Nope. Today I was putting out fires with the students. Projects are late or not turned in. I'm exhausted. In the beginning of the year is filled with hope and everyone's potential is bursting. At the end of the year I feel drained that in some cases I am dealing with the same things I dealt with in August. I sometimes want to reply, "Really? We're dealing with this again?" The funniest part is that I really enjoy these kids' personalities.

I had a good chat with my mom last weekend about all of this. She reminded me that I have no idea of the impact I have had and who those students are that I have reached. I know that's true, but I just don't feel it at this point. I want to see a difference NOW. I want it to be like the movies where the teacher knows how that child is forever changed.

Josh asked me what my goal is for the kids each year. My goal is that I want them to grow. I want them to grow as students and as humans. Most students show that growth and move forward in the path of education. Others do not...and the bottom line is that I feel like I failed them. I can count these students on one hand, but in my eyes, I should have none. I take it upon myself to ask, "what if I did this or that differently?" It's self torture, really. I try not to take the weight of my job home with me, and my family makes it very easy to leave it at work, but sometimes I can't avoid it.

Maybe these few students will surprise me with an "aha" before June 3rd. If not, I will try and shift my focus to the majority of the kids who I know grew, in all ways or one, this year.

A Second and a First

For years Josh and I have paid the toll for the car behind us. We think it's fun. A couple of weeks ago we saw the car behind us then pay the toll for the car behind them. This is the second time this has happened and we LOVE it!
Then this weekend, on the way to Tahoe, for the first time there was no car behind us to pay for. I admit that it was kind of nice to only pay one toll. It was even nicer that the traffic was so light on the way to Tahoe on a Friday.
Next time you cross a bridge, think about paying the toll for the car behind you. It's a small act of kindness that brightens your day a bit.

Friends, Fairies, Footwork and a Field Trip

Wow. I have been a slacker with the blog. We've been having so much fun! At the end of our spring break we (the girls) went to San Francisco with our dear friends, Courtney and Camryn. We had a great time wearing the girls out by riding the cable car, walking around the piers, and going on the bungee! Both of the girls giggled as they went higher and higher and both screamed, "AGAIN!" when we were done.

They each brought $20 of their own money to spend on something of their choice. They both picked the same item (surprise, surprise). They sported their bunny hats that are also gloves all around the city!
Last weekend we had the pleasure of going to Lake Tahoe with our friends Guido and Bridge. It was so nice to see their lovely new home and just be able to hang out. It seems like every time we see each other we are in a rush either chasing the kids or sticking to a timeline. I can't remember the last time we just relaxed and chatted with them. They were SO generous with their house and with the kids. We sipped on the best margaritas EVER. Josh has named them the "Guidoritas." Let me know if you want the recipe. You will not be disappointed.
Here is Haley at her dance recital this past weekend. She has been taking a tap and ballet class at the community center. I LOVED her experience. I am convinced community center classes are the way to go. All classes are reasonable priced and very much age appropriate. She did a wonderful job. We were so proud of her.

It's not easy to see in the picture but she has 3 less teeth! That's a total of 6 permanent teeth now. She had 3 pulled last week. Like me, her teeth are coming in behind her baby teeth and not pushing them out. Her top two were pushed forward and she had some sweet bucky teeth for awhile. They will be missed, but I got lots of pictures of this phase. :) One was super loose and came out when she fell in our friend's yard, but the rest had to be pulled. She was a champ and was thrilled when the Tooth Fairy came again!
Last week I had one of the best days with Haley. I took the day off to chaperone her one field trip this year. To say she was excited is a complete understatement. She was excited that:
a. she would be riding the school bus to the trip
b. I would be a chaperone
c. we were going to Happy Hollow
The trip was no let down. She and her friend giggled the entire bus ride. She was so proud to introduce me to her friends I hadn't met. They basically had the park to themselves so once we were done with the animals and lunch it was roller coaster time. No exaggeration, they went on at least a dozen times. They would ride, run off, and run back on. They would scream and laugh the entire ride and then repeat. I have a great picture of Haley with her hands up, but it wouldn't transfer for some reason. In fact, I have some great shots of Haley with the kids, but they are close ups with their full name tags on and so I can't publish :(
I cherished being there as her mom during her day. It made me long to be able to take her and pick her up from school every day and be able to volunteer in her room. We are so blessed to have so many people who love our kids and take care of them while we work. I just know to soak in those wonderful days that I get to be a mom volunteer during her school day. We were both high from it all. It was a perfect day together.

Josh and I are into our May challenge of no TV. I'll fill you in as the month progresses. :)

Next post you'll get some Ry :)
